their nature, are weird.
about it—they’re (often) miniature representations of people meant to be played
with. They’re inanimate objects. With another person or an animal, there’s an
exchange, an actual relationship of some kind. But with a doll, there’s nothing
inside the doll to interact with. Yet we design them specifically to encourage that
interaction. In fact, we craft dolls specifically to invite children and adults
alike to construct identities for their dolls, to feel like there’s some kind
of relationship there. Because dolls demand that the person invent a
personality for the doll, a narrative for the doll, a ghost of a person to live
within the doll.
That’s weird, right?
It’s time for the Golden Globes!
First given in 1944, the Golden Globes are widely regarded as the official kick-off of Hollywood’s awards season. The Golden Globes are prestigious, given to the best in both Film and Television, which makes the Golden Globes a sort of hybrid between the Emmys and the Oscars. Unlike its big sister, the Oscars, the Golden Globes split the film categories into “Drama” and “Musical or Comedy” while eschewing categories for technical achievements, like cinematography and editing. The Golden Globes are focused on big names and talent, which ensures that a lot of beautiful people show up to the ceremony and a lot of people tune in to watch. (Also, they serve dinner and tons of booze during the ceremony, which means lots of drunk people. Always good for ratings!)
So while Hollywood doesn’t regard the Golden Globes as prestigious as the Oscars, Hollywood does see the Golden Globes as an opportunity to recognize achievement from a larger group of films. More importantly, the Golden Globes take place before the Academy announces Oscar nominations and give a sharp insight into who the Academy might choose to recognize that year.
You’d think that would have translated into more and more horror films receiving recognition, but alas, that hasn’t happened.
This year, however, The Shape of Water and Get Out are both nominated in film, with Stranger Things and Twin Peaks receiving some nominations in television. It’s heartening to see such recognition, especially for Get Out, which is more of a straight horror movie than The Shape of Water, but no less carefully and expertly made.
The premiere of Season 10 of The X-Files has come and gone, and so far, I’ve been pleased.
While the first episode may not have been the strongest episode ever, it gave us a solid dose of those mythological in scope, all-encompassing conspiracy theories we’ve come to know and love. Episode 2 was way more solid, truth be told, and pulled no punches when it came to violence and gore, which was a pleasant surprise.
It is good to have the old X-Files back. Conspiracy theories are all well and good, yes, but I have to say that I prefer the monster-of-the-week episodes with lots of scares and gore. They affect me more, they arrest my imagination and my heart and genuinely terrify. Those episodes make me question so much as they confront me with truly horrifying stories.
It’s why I keep coming back to The X-Files. I love how The X-Files forces me to think even as it entertains me, even as it scares me.
So, to continue from this post, here is Part 2 of my list of X-Files episodes that continue to scare me. Again, these episodes are presented in the order they aired.
(Also, spoiler alert, though, for real, these episodes aired at least ten years ago, if not longer. At this point, it’s your fault if you haven’t seen them. But at any rate, if you haven’t seen The X-Files, watch the whole show and then come back.)
My first love was The X-Files.
As a child, I loved the show because it was smart and scary and grown-up. It had everything–monsters, aliens, unsolvable mysteries, government conspiracies, the quest for “The Truth,” and of course, Special Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. I didn’t always understand the implications of what happened in each episode, but I was transfixed. I couldn’t get enough of those weird, shocking, and eerie stories.
