The heat is settling over the country, and so too are the July horror movies creeping onto the big and little screens. This new crop of horror movies is overtaking us all with a cloud of weird VOD releases and an eclectic mix of theatrical releases. To be honest, July horror is a crapshoot every year–for every sumptuously shot arthouse horror film like Midsommer, you have a cheap looking The Strangers rip-off like They’re Inside. For every enigmatic and dread-inducing foreign film like Luz, there’s a survival horror flick about a killer croc during a hurricane (which feels somewhat-opportunistic given all the damn hurricanes recently, Paramount!) But hey, there’s something on this list for everyone!
And I’m going to call July horror a success for no other reason than Critters Attack! is in my life now. I must see it.
What is it about the spooky, provocative short story that moves us so? Whether it’s listening to the big kids recount ghost stories around a campfire or reading creepypastas under the covers in the middle of the night, we cannot resist the pull of eerie, enigmatic stories that linger long after they’ve finished imparting their lessons.
Personally, I’ve been fascinated and transfixed by these kinds of stories my whole life. Ghost stories, urban legends, local folklore, internet nightmares–I love all of them. And one of the reasons why I love them so much is due, in large part, to watching The Twilight Zone with my grandmother.
Before I could really understand what I was seeing, I remember visiting my grandparents’ house and watching episodes of the Twilight Zone on what was once The Sci-Fi Channel. My grandmother, who was a loving and fun grandma, was also a well-mannered and restrained woman who never had a messy house and just wasn’t a fan of dark fiction, be it books or movies tv shows. (Assuming that it was a hard-hitting period piece or something, she and my grandfather once walked out of a screening of Men in Black. Another time, I made her watch X-Men with me, and she told me in that it was the worst movie she’d ever seen.) I wasn’t allowed to watch certain movies or TV shows because they were “unpleasant” or “inappropriate.” But for some reason, she didn’t mind The Twilight Zone, and she let me watch them. Sometimes, she watched them with me.
A new year, a new slate of horror movies to anticipate. This year, as with nearly every year, there are so many horror films to choose from. And as with every year, there are some movies that look DOA (like La Llorona, which looks so cheesy) as well as some films that will blow us all away (Jordan Peele’s Us looks way intense, I’m ready but so unprepared at the same time).
That being said, this year’s anticipated horror list includes a whole lot of sequels (4 total) and remakes (2 total). 2019 is the year of Stephen King, as his stories have inspired THREE of the fourteen movies on my list. But there’s also a fair bit of original content, like Us, Brightburn, and Ma.

I have to be honest…I’m disappointed in the slate of horror movies for October 2018.
Shouldn’t the movie release calendar for October be overflowing with horror movies? I’m not even asking for good horror movies. I’ll take them all–well-made, shoddily-made, solid casts, bad acting, inventive premises, uninspired ripoffs–I don’t care.
Where are all the horror movies?
I suppose I should be thankful for the movies we have. After all, the latest Halloween comes out this month, and I could not be more excited! Netflix’s Apostle and indie film The Dark also look like great contenders for worthwhile horror.
In fact, I’m just going to spend a lot of my time on Netflix this Halloween. Between Apostle and Netflix’s new series, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and The Haunting of Hill House, Netflix seems like a sure bet for horror.
That’s not to say you shouldn’t check out the rest of the horror offerings this month. Maybe just…temper your expectations.
Today is the official start of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), which marks the unofficial beginning of “prestige movie season”! Every year, major studio and indie films vie for spots on the TIFF line-up in the hopes of garnering buzz and positive reviews to hype their releases. They’re also hoping for the kind of critical acclaim that wins films prestigious awards.
Unlike some other festivals of this caliber, TIFF always makes room for horror movies in their lineup. In recent years, TIFF has showcased films like The Grudge in 2002, Hostel in 2005, Inside (À l’intérieur) in 2007, 2008’s The Loved Ones, Black Swan in 2009, The Lords of Salem in 2012, and Raw in 2016. Last year, TIFF screened mother!, Veronica, The Ritual (loved that movie!), Mom and Dad, and of course, Guillermo del Toro’s Oscar-winning The Shape of Water.
This year, TIFF has an impressive slate of horror movies, from the highly anticipated Halloween to quieter entries like The Wind. I can’t wait to see which ones will make a splash! Read on to see the full line-up!
Do you feel that change in the air? In Texas, it’s no longer 100 degrees every day, and the mornings almost feel…pleasant? It must be fall!
Now that summer is drawing to a close, we’re less than 60 days out from Halloween! That means we’re about to get a whole slew of horror movies in anticipation of our favorite holiday.
And boy, does September deliver a bunch of horror movies. The quality of these movies varies, but there are some exciting choices here, like Nic Cage’s metal-horror Mandy and the religious-horror film Don’t Leave Home. Due to a crowded October release schedule, we also get a lot of big-name horror films this month, like sequels The Nun and The Predator. There’s also The House with a Clock in Its Walls, which might go on to become a kids’ horror classic.
Let’s get to it!
*Be Warned – Very Mild Spoilers for A Quiet Place*
I’ve always said that, for any medium, the key to creating a compelling narrative is developed characters. This is especially true in crafting exceptional horror movies, where the disturbing events unfolding on screen pack an intense punch not just because of their scariness but because of the risk they pose to characters the audiences cares about. Yeah, a novel concept, good pacing, and deft camera work contribute, but no one cares about any of that if the characters aren’t watchable.
This is especially true for A Quiet Place, which wisely uses its script and actors as the foundation upon which the whole movie is based. Its inventive concept, heart-pounding scenes, and swelling tension would have fallen flat without the work that went into the script and the acting. In doing so, A Quiet Place stakes a claim as the first exceptional horror movie of 2018. (I know that’s not saying much when compared to films like Winchester or The Strangers: Prey at Night, but the rest of 2018’s horror movie faces stiff competition.)
I. Am. Pumped. April horror is chock full of all sorts of festival horror movies I’ve been waiting for, and they look great!
This April, we’re getting not one, not two, but three horror movies from last month’s SXSW, and they look amazing. I can already confirm that A Quiet Place, starring Emily Blunt and John Krasinski, is very good and highly enjoyable. That leaves Wildling, one of the festival’s unexpected triumphs, and Ghost Stories, a spectacularly moody British ghost tale.
And then, on top of everything, Marrowbone, the latest effort from Spanish filmmaker Sergio G. Sanchez (El Orfanto) drops this month. Swoon.
Also among the April horror releases are a few horror films that look cheesy, contrived, and quite frankly, delightful! Truth or Dare promises the kind of schlocky teenage horror we all secretly enjoy (don’t lie) while Bus Party to Hell demands to be seen on the strength of its title alone. I will oblige.
Seriously, this is a great month for both quality horror and popcorn-flick fun.

After the intense year of horror movies that was 2017, I’m confident that the 2018 horror calendar will be just as full of solid and groundbreaking films.
True, there are lousy horror movies every year, but there is an undeniable upward trend of quality, well-made horror movies. This year, the 2018 horror release calendar has a bevy of goodies for us, like from horror novel adaptions Annihilation and Birdbox, the latest entry in horror franchises such as The Purge: The Island and The Nun, and brand new stories like A Quiet Place and Slaughterhouse Rulez. There’s so much I don’t really know what to be more excited for, but the new Suspiria reimagining (don’t call it a remake!) is probably the 2018 horror movie I’m most anxious for.
It’s time for the Golden Globes!
First given in 1944, the Golden Globes are widely regarded as the official kick-off of Hollywood’s awards season. The Golden Globes are prestigious, given to the best in both Film and Television, which makes the Golden Globes a sort of hybrid between the Emmys and the Oscars. Unlike its big sister, the Oscars, the Golden Globes split the film categories into “Drama” and “Musical or Comedy” while eschewing categories for technical achievements, like cinematography and editing. The Golden Globes are focused on big names and talent, which ensures that a lot of beautiful people show up to the ceremony and a lot of people tune in to watch. (Also, they serve dinner and tons of booze during the ceremony, which means lots of drunk people. Always good for ratings!)
So while Hollywood doesn’t regard the Golden Globes as prestigious as the Oscars, Hollywood does see the Golden Globes as an opportunity to recognize achievement from a larger group of films. More importantly, the Golden Globes take place before the Academy announces Oscar nominations and give a sharp insight into who the Academy might choose to recognize that year.
You’d think that would have translated into more and more horror films receiving recognition, but alas, that hasn’t happened.
This year, however, The Shape of Water and Get Out are both nominated in film, with Stranger Things and Twin Peaks receiving some nominations in television. It’s heartening to see such recognition, especially for Get Out, which is more of a straight horror movie than The Shape of Water, but no less carefully and expertly made.
