My Faves, Surprises, Disappointments – 2017 Horror Movies

2017 may have sucked in a lot of ways, but 2017 was a great year for horror. From clear standouts like Get Out to darkhorse surprises like Split, I enjoyed a great deal of 2017 horror. Even the not-so-great horror films failed to make me want to claw my face off.

Admittedly, I avoided tragic and terrible movies like Rings and Wish Upon because I didn’t need to pay to know they sucked. And I didn’t see every single horror 2017 film because, as I mentioned, 2017 was a difficult year.

At any rate, I’ve identified five movies in three categories—Favorites, Surprises, and Disappointments. Do my ratings match up with yours?

New September 2017 Horror Releases!

Did you know It, the long-anticipated major studio adaptation of Stephen King’s most messed up novel, is being released this month? Of course you did, because those freaky trailers have been everywhere!

Did you know that Darren Aronofsky’s mother! is also being released and marks the director’s return to exquisite psychological horror? You sure do if you follow this blog, because I won’t shut up about it.

With those two films only, September 2017 is a good month for new horror movies. The same garden-variety, lamesauce horror films crop up (Temple, The Sound), but we’ve also got a few Netflix and indie horror movies that are worth a closer look (The Limehouse Golem, FlatlinersDon’t Sleep).

Enjoy!

My List of Most Anticipated Horror Films of 2017

A new year, a new list! It’s time for my list of most anticipated horror films of 2017!

Let’s be honest, 2016 sucked in a lot of ways, not least of wish was that the horror movie release calendar was disappointing. Don’t get me wrong, there were some great 2016 horror movies with real terror, solid scares, and provocative storytelling. But there were some real duds, the kind that made me roll my eyes and sigh at the state of the horror industry.

Yet here comes 2017, still full of hope and potential, sharing bright and shiny horror trailers for all. Among 2017’s most anticipated horror are dark and twisted social commentaries,  high-profile reboots of horror movie classics, gorgeous grotesqueries, and a few black pearls of brave indie filmmaking.

Check them out!

30 Years of IT – Stephen King’s Enduring Horror Classic

September marks the 30th anniversary of IT, Stephen King’s infamous 1986 novel. IT sold a million copies in its first run and spent weeks on the bestseller lists. Like so many of King’s horrific tales, IT has broken past the confines of the own story, spreading chills and scares through our nation’s pop culture and terrorizing children and adults alike. People who have never read the book or seen the movie still know who Pennywise the Clown is.

Case in point: when I was a child, all the kids at school knew about the killer clown from the sewer who murdered children. We’d all seen that black book with the blood red letters sitting on a parent’s bookshelf, just out of reach. Some of us had even seen parts of the movie. Many of us had no idea what the actual story was; it didn’t stop us. We whispered and teased each other about Pennywise, and no one really wanted a clown at their birthday party. Such was the strength of that symbol.
