Horror and The 2016 Cannes Film Festival

With all the pomp and circumstance surrounding a prestigious Hollywood event, you probably wouldn’t expect a glittering affair like the Cannes Film Festival to include hard-hitting horror films. Cannes is where Hollywood finds a steady stream of award-worthy and award-baiting movies, right? The heavy, boring, historical drama stuff, right?

That’s true. Cannes is prestigious for a reason. Every year, the festival showcases emerging talents alongside master filmmakers, and many of those films are either good enough or earn enough hype to be marketed as highbrow cinema.

But it’s also true that Cannes has a deep commitment to varied viewpoints. The festival loves innovation. It pays tribute to films from different countries, different voices, and different genres, including horror.

You might reminisce about past Christmases or tell stories about the meaning of each ornament on the tree. Or you could tell each other ghost stories. Christmas ghost stories.

It’s not as weird as you might think and, in fact, Christmas ghost stories are a time-honored tradition that has been somewhat forgotten as of late. The tradition started in Britain and quickly spread to the U.S. Every Christmas Eve, whole families gathered around the fire and scared each other silly with ghost stories.

November 2015 Horror Movie Releases

It’s no surprise that November is a rather slow month for new horror movie releases, considering how many new horror movies came out in October. That being said, I’m still a little disappointed that there are only five new horror releases.

Despite the low volume, November will see a critically acclaimed creature-feature, a hipster version of The Crazies, a ridiculous (in a good way) slasher, a stylish and hopefully substantive preteen slasher, and the latest film adaptation of Frankenstein.

This list may not contain the best horror movies in the world, but I’m intrigued and will definitely add some of these to my watch list, especially now that we’re moving into those desolate winter months. Check out the November 2015 horror movie releases below!
