Here is the third installment of my NaPoWriMo 2015 poem challenge. I wrote a poem a day for the entire month of April, all of which I’ve posted to Instagram and am now compiling here. Check out the first installment here and the second here.

For this series of poems, I was inspired by history, natural phenomena,  and fairy tales.

Enjoy! Don’t forget to follow me on Instagram @storiesforghosts.

Day 15:

Day 15: Lampa, Peru, is a fascinating place I hope to visit one day. This poem was inspired by the tomb of Enrique Torres Belon. He had the skeletons of buried villagers dug up and used to decorate his tomb. Lampa Who plucked us from the earth, For our cool, snug graves? We lived our lives, Unfurling and blossoming and reaching to the sky Until the sun set and winter touched us each Tracing a small cross on our foreheads, Bidding us to rest. We obeyed the laws of heaven And we were happy to burrow down Like roots, anchoring the future. But now, it was all for nothing. Who was this man who strung us up Inside a great stone column Where there is nothing, Not even the wind visits To rattle through our ribs, our teeth. No, we are silent. We do not move We cannot unfurl and blossom and reach for the sky. We hang side by side Like faded tapestries of Stories no one remembers. And now he sleeps, oblivious Of our empty black eyes Searching the sky for justice. #lampaperu #peru #tomb #ossuarytomb #skeletons #burial #dead #creepy #morbid #macabre #poem #poet #poetry #poemcommunity #poetrychallenge #poetsofinstagram #amwriting #napowrimo #aprilpoems

Day 16:

Day 16: inspired by all the intense and awesome storms we've had here in Houston. Storm Thunderclouds churn on the horizon. The air, wilted in the heat, Gasps for its last breath before It collapses, lost In the ravages of a furious wind. Outside, we sit at the picnic table, Which is bleached and grainy from the setting sun, You take a swig of beer and Light a cigarette, A faltering beacon beneath the darkening sky. I’d like to snatch that cigarette and Put it out on your face or Put it out on my hand. Instead, I smile and point to the storm. Welcome to Texas, I say. #storm #thunderstorm #Texas #texasweather #rain #clouds #tension #poem #poet #poemcommunity #poetry #poetrychallenge #poetsofinstagram #amwriting #writersofinstagram #napowrimo #nationalpoetrymonth

Day 17:

Day 17 The Boy The horror of this moment is rendered Like a great symphony Suddenly silenced. That little boy, one moment, A perfect package of flesh and bone and blood and brain Seamless, no pain, Timeless, all dreams, All of it swimming inside him, Propelling him forward Until a furious white rage blew him apart, Shattered the instrument of his body. One moment, he was a little boy, The next, pieces of him broke free of form, The next, he was a red mist of particles (f you look closely you can see all the moments of his life in the mist) and then he is gone, nothing more than dead meat and pixels, his smiling face plastered all over the news— a cruel trick. He seems almost alive. No. He was once a person. Now, just piece of torn sheet music. #poem #death #child #highgatecemetery #gravestone #angel #poetry #poet #poetrychallenge #poetsofinstagram #poemcommunity #macabre #gloomy #sad #amwriting

Day 18:

Day 19:

Day 19: lets do a series based on the "original" rendering of several fairy tales, which were quite dark and gory before Disney got ahold of them. Bluebeard Men like you like you enjoy Walking around in a castle of your own making, Gloating over each past conquest, Relishing in each of their vanquished corpses, Trophies few men have ever won Or would ever dream pursuing. I didn’t need a gore-stained key Crimson with the blood of missing wives To unlock your secret. And I didn’t need the glittering jewels of My predecessors in this cursed marriage bed To know what you have done. Men like you die in agony, Choking on your own bile While I watch the life drain away, My knuckles white from joy and relief That you are defeated That I have slain a most despicable beast. #fairytale #Bluebeard #darkfairytale #dark #bloody #macabre #morbid #creepy #poem #poet #poetry #poemcommunity #poetsofinstagram #writersofinstagram #amwriting #aprilpoems #poetrychallenge

Day 20:

Day 20: the Snow Queen Ice White Once, I loved a man, Strong and true. His kiss was blossoming against my lips Taking root in my throat. His heart beating against my chest and Cracking my ribs with the force of his love for me. Then the Queen came, all bitter winds and driving snow. He and I sought shelter under the trees But the shards of ice, hurled at her command, Pierced his eyes, blinding him, And her long cold dagger found his heart. He cried out, but when I reached for him He did not know me. She is cruel. She did not take him, no, she left him. He looks at me with terrible silver eyes. He speaks to me, words he has said before, but There are no more kisses, no more heartbeats. He is nothing and everything He is icy loathing and he is warm memories. I wish she had killed him. #snowqueen #icewhite #fairytale #darkfairytale #dark #creepy #sad #love #macabre #morbid #mcqueen #alexandermcqueen #poem #poet #poetry #poemcommunity #poetrychallenge #poetsofinstagram #amwriting #writersofinstagram #aprilpoems #antlers #white

Day 21:

Day 21: this one is about Sleeping Beauty. If you haven't read the original story, do it! It's sooo messed up. Beauty In this moment she is mine. I slogged through the cracked barren wasteland. I hacked away the serrated blades of the thorns. I beheaded the vile serpent guarding the gates Before I crept up the stairs of the northern-most tower To find her here, Asleep Beautiful Pristine Untouched Pure Mine. In this moment, she belongs to no other man. I alone can wake her. I alone can restore her sight. I along can give her life, But I cannot bear the thought of her leaving This bed, this castle, my grasp. Fair Princess, forgive me. You must not be awakened. #sleepingbeauty #fairytale #darkfairytale #dark #creepy #macabre #stalker #morbid #poem #poet #poetry #poemcommunity #poetrychallenge #poetsofinstagram #writersofinstagram #amwriting #aprilpoems

Day 22:

Day 22: as I got older, I started feeling a teensy bit sorry for the evil queen in Snow White… The Apple How dare you judge me! I had to preserve what was mine. She may seem unthreatening, but Her porcelain skin is a mask, Her ebony hair betrays the darkness of her soul, And her crimson lips are forever stained With the blood of women like me, Women drained of our worth. She sucked my life away, Made me decrepit and gray, Bent under the weight of my years. She consumes the eyes of all who know her, So I gave her an apple In exchange for my heart. #snowwhite #dark #fairytale #darkfairytale #apple #blood #snow #creepy #macabre #morbid #poem #poet #poetry #poemcommunity #poetrychallenge #poetsofinstagram #amwriting #writersofinstagram #aprilpoems

Day 23:

Day 23: The Little Mermaid I should never have left the sea And its loving, watery comfort. The sun is too bright, it burns my eyes. The wind is too harsh, it leaves my lungs parched. Men are cruel beyond words. You do not want me. I, who cut out my tongue for you I, who danced through agony for you I, who refused to bleed you dry. All these sacrifices I offer in vain. And I will never return to the sea Which will withhold the still, quiet death Of waves and tides and seafoam And reject me, lift me to the heavens, Where I will toil until my selflessness is proven. #thelittlemermaid #fairytale #dark #darkfairytale #hanschristiananderson #sad #unrequitedlove #love #creepy #morbid #macabre #poem #poet #poetry #poemcommunity #poetrychallenge #poetsofinstagram #amwriting #writersofinstagram #aprilpoems
