It feels like only yesterday that I was doing the post for July horror movies. Fast forward a month, and not only have I finally recovered from a whirlwind vacation in China, but a ton of August horror movies were added to the release schedule! It seems like the 2017 horror release schedule saved a lot for later.
Yes, the end of summer is upon us, and that means long and hot days where the air conditioning provides blessed relief from the inferno outside. What better way than to stay indoors and watch scary movies? Some of these look amazing, like The Dark Tower, Annabelle: Creation, Dave Made a Maze, and Death Note. Others will please certain genre fans who crave blood and guts, like Cut Shoot Kill and Red Christmas.
I think there’s something for everyone here, so get yourself to the nearest theater, buy an ice-cold beverage of your choice, and enjoy the show.
The Tribeca Film Festival starts tomorrow! The film festival circuit is in full swing and Tribeca is the latest prestigious stop. And I’m going to tell you all about the featured horror films.
Tribeca may not be Cannes, but in its relatively short existence, Tribeca has proven itself a formidable and important film festival. Founded in 2002 by producer Jane Rosenthal, renowned actor Robert De Niro, and real estate mogul Craig Hatkoff, Tribeca has made a name for itself as a festival dedicated to presenting discerning and innovative filmmaking. More than the Cannes Film Festival or the Toronto International Film Festival, Tribeca is about independent films over “prestige studio movies.”
This year, there’s a great mix of various horror subgenres, from serial killer movies to artistic slashers to psychological horror, with loads of films falling between those categories or smashing through them. I have a feeling that some of these feature and short films will go on to generate plenty of buzz. Hopefully, we will see general releases of some of these. I’m particularly excited about Hounds of Love, Psychopaths, and Retouch.
Well, we’re in the full film festival swing of things, which means that there is an exciting new crop of horror movies up for distribution rights! But this also means that, as far as a wide-release calendar goes, there isn’t much to see this April.
In fact, while this month’s slate of horror movies is refreshingly inventive, it’s going to be difficult for anyone to see these outside of major movie markets like New York and Los Angeles. I’m particularly sad about scrounging for a screening of sci-fi existential body horror flick The Void, praying for a showing of the macabre and witchy A Dark Song, and wishing for a chance to see Voice from the Stone, despite my misgivings.
However, many of these movies will be available on VOD shortly after their limited runs, so you won’t have to wait so long!
Spring Break in Texas means a lot of things, like South Padre Island, Mustang Island, and South by South West!
I have many a fond memory of my time as a college student in Austin, Texas, too poor and too uncool to go to the exclusive, VIP SXSW events and having to settle for free events and waiting in line for screenings and concerts. Most of the time, I could only ever get into the musical events. I dreamed of the day I could afford a VIP pass to the SXSW Film Festival, especially because of all the freakin’ amazing SXSW horror movies there. So many great horror films premiered at SXSW! To name a few of those SXSW horror films, take French-extremism horror film Them, Lake Mungo, Insidious, and The Cabin in the Woods, to name a few.
Sadly, I’m still not in a place where I can take off a whole week to go party in Austin. Someday, I’ll get there. But until then, here’s a list of SXSW horror movies that are premiering this year! I’ve included a synopsis and a trailer if available. Enjoy!
February has arrived! And it brought along a pretty full slate of horror movies. This month we’ve got some impressive and hyped films, like A Cure for Wellness, Get Out, and XX. We’ve got Rings, which Paramount Pictures really wants to be a hit but actually looks convoluted and unintentionally hilarious. There’s also The Girl with All the Gifts, an adaptation of the 2014 bestselling zombie novel, and the normal amount of indie horror films that may or may not be worth your time.

Contrary to popular belief, January can be an exciting time for horror fans for one big reason—the Sundance Film Festival, one of the industry’s major film festivals. Every January, Sundance bestows upon us weird, frightening, and bizarrely amazing horror movies.
Come tomorrow, Sundance will kick off premieres and screenings of buzzworthy movies. While Sundance doesn’t specialize in horror movies (sadly), the festival is committed to providing a platform for intriguing and promising films, many of which are horror. Films like The Blair Witch Project, American Psycho, 28 Days Later, The Descent, and the Witch.
Horror has always had a place at the high-brow-film table, and Sundance has a proven record for bringing fresh horror to hungry audiences.
Last June, I wrote about the horror movie lineup at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, where films like Green Room premiered in 2015 and Raw and The Neon Demon premiered in 2016. I decided to do a similar post for the horror lineup at Sundance, especially with films like XX, Killing Ground, and Bitch scheduled for screenings. Let’s be honest, 2016 sucked in a lot of ways, not least of wish was that the horror movie release calendar was disappointing. Don’t get me wrong, there were some great 2016 horror movies with real terror, solid scares, and provocative storytelling. But there were some real duds, the kind that made me roll my eyes and sigh at the state of the horror industry.
Yet here comes 2017, still full of hope and potential, sharing bright and shiny horror trailers for all. Among 2017’s most anticipated horror are dark and twisted social commentaries, high-profile reboots of horror movie classics, gorgeous grotesqueries, and a few black pearls of brave indie filmmaking.

I think most of us would agree that 2016 was a rough year, full of highs and lows. The horror movie scene was the same, full of some mediocre titles, but peppered throughout with both good and bad films. I, for one, loved a number of films that were very good and some others that were enjoyably bad (The Shallows is my new favorite guilty pleasure).
So, as a way to close the book on 2016, I’ve compiled a list of my five favorite horror movies of 2016. I’m not saying these are the best horror movies of 2016, because I haven’t seen every single horror movie released in 2016. I just really loved these five movies. I tried to represent a bunch of different types of horror films from the year. Some appealed to my own particular horror tastes and preferences. Others challenged my preconceived notions about the limitations of some horror-subgenres. They were all great movies that disturbed me in one way or another, sticking with me for days, even weeks.

Unfortunately, 2016 hasn’t been the best year for horror movies, though it hasn’t been the worst either. In fact, 2016 seems to have been a moderate year, with some of the best films exhibiting hard-to-ignore flaws and the worst films showing flashes of promise. All the good films seemingly came out of left field while all we got from the hyped horror movies were splashy marketing campaigns and disappointment. For me, no other 2016 Horror Movie exemplifies this better than The Neon Demon.

If you pay attention to movies at all, you’ve noticed the proliferation of remakes. Since the beginning of the film industry, producers and directors have recycled and revamped material. The remake has proved itself a trusted Hollywood standby, combining a tried-and-true formula with an audience that is (hopefully) willing to pay to see a rehash of a popular film.
To a degree, it makes perfect business sense. The story is already written. The original is already embedded in pop culture. And sometimes, a cult classic could use an upgrade, especially with a bigger budget and more experienced filmmakers taking the reins.
But more often than not, it seems that the opposite is true, and that many remakes are unnecessary, paling in comparison to their storied predecessors. Such projects smack of opportunism and audiences can usually see right through it. We’ve all been there, rolling our eyes when a trailer for the remake of Poltergeist lumbers on screen or snickering to ourselves when we learn that Nightmare on Elm Street is getting second reboot.
