Do you know when Christmas for horror fans is?
If you said Halloween, I hate to break it to you, but you’re wrong.
Because horror Christmas starts this Thursday, August 23, 2018, when the FrightFest Film Festival kicks off in London, England.
As a genre, horror rarely receives the respect it deserves. Imaginative, crowd-pleasing horror films are too easily dismissed and underestimated by major studios and audiences alike. That’s not to say that there aren’t plenty of horror films that have wowed both dedicated horror fans and critics (a la Get Out, Hereditary, see my whole blog). But honestly, there are way more horror films deserving of attention, if not acclaim.
That’s why I started blogging about horror movies at film festivals and why I’m so excited about this year’s FrightFest. I wanted to bring attention to horror films that, against harsh odds, broke out of their confines and stampeded into the spotlight. From Sundance to Cannes to TIFF, horror movies are proving that they can hang with the best of the best.
Still, it’s exhausting always having to prove that point, isn’t it?
But this week, my horror-fan prayers will be answered by the 18th annual FrightFest, a unique film festival dedicated to horror and other genre-bending films. FrightFest initially started as a quest to give British horror fans a high-caliber horror film festival before quickly becoming an internationally renowned festival. FrightFest is the festival where Danny Boyle debuted the first reel of 28 Days Later, where Guillermo del Toro chose to premiere Pan’s Labyrinth instead of the more glitzy London Film Festival, and where Neil Marshall held a gala preview for The Descent.
After seeing Hereditary a few weeks ago, I left stunned, thinking that I hadn’t seen a horror film like Hereditary in a very long time. So much happened, much of it overwhelming in its emotional punch and terror. I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I gave up trying to decipher things and instead just let memories of it come to me. It is one of the most genuinely horrific films I’ve seen recently. It’s also one of the most depressing films I’ve seen in a long time.
After weeks of not knowing how to write this review, I finally managed to lean into the film’s complexity. Hereditary is so good at unfolding itself, at managing what information it offers the audience and when. Not only does this model make for excellent slow burns, but it also mirrors the disintegration of the family as their first loss spirals into unimaginable horror. It is a tragic story, really, a film about a woman that unwittingly enables and fulfills her family’s nightmarish fate.
As far as horror movies go, Hereditary isn’t focused on entertainment, though I found the film entertaining in and of itself. No, Hereditary is more focused on using its story and characters to create a fundamentally unnerving experience. It explores how we are at our most vulnerable around our family members, and despite our fervent beliefs that we can ignore the scars and outrun the past, we can’t always. Continue reading
You guys. I can’t believe how short the June horror movie slate is this month! I mean, don’t you think you’d want to spread your summer horror releases out? Guess not, because June is sparse this month. There are only two major theatrical releases and a few VOD releases.
Though, to be fair, June horror has the incendiary Hereditary, fresh off the indie festival circuit and burning up the internet with tons of critical acclaim. That alone makes up for the shortage of other major horror titles and the duds rounding out June horror movies, like The Toybox and Ghostland. So I guess we can call it even?
There’s always July, when The First Purge and The Nun come out!

The Cannes Film Festival is officially underway! Yay for independent artsy films!
In the past, Cannes has given us not only buzzworthy prestige films from around the world, but it has also been a source of horror films outside the Hollywood mainstream. I’ve covered both the 2016 and 2017 Cannes Film Festivals, which introduced to the world to films like Raw, Neon Demon, Train to Busan, and The Killing of a Sacred Deer. And that’s not to mention horror classics like Evil Dead or Pan’s Labyrinth.
I. Am. Pumped. April horror is chock full of all sorts of festival horror movies I’ve been waiting for, and they look great!
This April, we’re getting not one, not two, but three horror movies from last month’s SXSW, and they look amazing. I can already confirm that A Quiet Place, starring Emily Blunt and John Krasinski, is very good and highly enjoyable. That leaves Wildling, one of the festival’s unexpected triumphs, and Ghost Stories, a spectacularly moody British ghost tale.
And then, on top of everything, Marrowbone, the latest effort from Spanish filmmaker Sergio G. Sanchez (El Orfanto) drops this month. Swoon.
Also among the April horror releases are a few horror films that look cheesy, contrived, and quite frankly, delightful! Truth or Dare promises the kind of schlocky teenage horror we all secretly enjoy (don’t lie) while Bus Party to Hell demands to be seen on the strength of its title alone. I will oblige.
Seriously, this is a great month for both quality horror and popcorn-flick fun.

Festival season continues with the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas, which means there are new (and, hopefully, fresh) horror movies for us to peruse!
2018 marks the 25th year of the SXSW film festival. Just think of it–25 years of a fearless and unflinching commitment to emerging voices, diverse viewpoints, and plain crazy schemes that translate into memorable films! SXSW is known for its commitment to pushing the envelope of the film industry, and the horror industry knows this.
Tomorrow is the official kick-off of the Sundance Film Festival! That means you should get ready for a fresh round of groundbreaking, artistic, and unsettling indie horror films.
Sundance is the largest independent film festival in the United States and one of the beacons for upcoming independent horror films. Among the slate of prestigious arthouse flicks and top-tier foreign films, Sundance makes room for imaginative and innovative horror and genre films. Being the largest independent film festival in America and one of the most important film festivals in the world, Sundance provides invaluable exposure for horror films that buck the studio system and push the envelope.
All of which is great news for horror fans of all stripes.
Halloween has come and gone, leaving horror movies in its wake like so many crumpled candy wrappers on my coffee table. Just as we kind of ignore Thanksgiving and skip from Halloween to Christmas, November’s horror release calendar makes me long for December when The Shape of Water will grace theaters.
And yet, even though it’s a slow time of year for horror movies, all is not lost. Yes, there are some real stinkers on November’s slate, but look at the bright side! I’ve found a few promising movies here, like My Friend Dahmer, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, and Mayhem, all of which have toured the festivals and gained critical acclaim as examples of innovative and striking horror filmmaking. Sometimes it’s the most unassuming horror movies that make the biggest impact, right?
Fantastic Fest 2017 is here! Finally!a
Fantastic Fest is the largest film festival specializing in genre films, which basically means it focuses a lot more on sci-fi, horror, fantasy, action, and generally fun and weird movies. Fantastic Fest may not be a critical darling like Cannes, Venice, or Sundance, but it has a proven track record of showcasing crowd-pleasers and groundbreaking genre films. It usually picks up where TIFF leaves off, pushing the envelope even farther with non-horror movies like There Will Be Blood, Red, and John Wick.
These are the kinds of movies that really make you feel something, whether that’s a vicarious blood lust, a sense of wonder, squealing terror, or outright uncomfortable confusion. Fantastic Fest is always interesting and has something for every type of horror fan.
The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) continues the 2017 film festival season in style! And with tons of horror movies!
Thank God! I was getting a little parched with the paltry (though potent) slates of horror movies at Cannes and Venice.
Honestly, it’s not a surprise that TIFF has much more horror than the other festivals. TIFF has always been a little more…risky than some of the more prestigious festivals. Not that TIFF isn’t prestigious–it regularly attracts top-level talent and Oscar contenders. It’s just that TIFF is a little more daring. A little more willing to recognize the worth and artistic accomplishments of genre films.
As Vox put it, “Cannes films often skew toward more rarefied and international films, while at Toronto…you can find bigger crowdpleasers that might also find more money at the box office and wind up bigger awards-season contenders…TIFF sets the pace for the year’s awards chatter.”
And just to underscore the point, TIFF regularly hits homeruns, especially in horror. TIFF has debuted such horror films as Dario Argento’s Opera in 1989, Peter Jackson’s Braindead in 1992, The Grudge in 2002, Hostel in 2005, Inside (À l’intérieur) in 2007, 2008’s The Loved Ones, Black Swan in 2009, The Lords of Salem in 2012, Emilie in 2015, and Raw in 2016, where multiple people passed out during the screening.
Thus, without further adieu, let’s get to TIFF 2017’s horror movies!
